The 'All-terrain' Handlaunch

This model was born of pure self-interest! Dave wanted a tough, lightweight handlaunch glider (HLG) that he could take down to the local public park and fly around for a while to take a break from the daily routine. Of course, it also had to look like a 'real' airplane, so he choose the venerable Schweizer 1-26 as a scale subject. This is the ultimate fly-anywhere HLG and is perfect for taking on trips or keeping around the office to fly on your lunch break. It shrugs off light poles, (don’t ask how I know) trees, cars, flying buddies, etc. to give maximum fun with minimum shop time. Certainly not competitive in today's contest environment, but certainly a blast for sport flying in seemingly impossible locations. It's thermal flying capabilities may really surprise you, and it's excellent as a light lift slope ship.

Control options

2 channel Rudder/Elevator with Polyhedral or 3 channel Aileron/Elevator/Rudder with plain dihedral wing. Kit may be built in either configuration. Just specify which wing you would like to build….Aileron version or Poly version.

What's included in the D.A.W. 1-26 Foamie HLG kit:

  • Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) foam wing panels with pre-cut spar slots
  • Preshaped leading edge
  • Machine cut Expanded Polypropylene fuselage
  • Balsa tail group
  • Basswood spars and and dihedral braces
  • Balsa sub-trailing edge
  • Balsa trailing edge stock
  • Complete hardware package for 3-channel flying, including pushrods
  • Block of scrap EPP foam for construction and repairs
  • Comprehensive instruction manual including CAD figures, taping diagrams and instructions for either polyhedral or aileron wing setup

What's needed to finish the 1-26:

  • Adhesives – 5 minute epoxy, polyurethane glue such as ProBond or Gorilla glue or Goop
  • Reinforcement tape
  • Covering material - UltraCote
  • Radio equipment –Hitec HS85 Metal Gear (preferred) Five Channel Receiver and any transmitter but a programmable TX will allow for Spoilerons with mixed in elevator compensation. (not required but it sure is nice) if you are building the aileron version. The polyhedral version does not require a computer radio.
